In Luke 10:38-42 Mary is sometimes thought of as a do-nothing lazing around while Martha hustles and bustles to prepare a meal and the house for the Savior. The opposite is true: Mary was doing something. She was turning her attention to the Word of the Lord, calm, alert, attentive, full of joy in the Holy Spirit, and rapt, absorbed in what her Lord was teaching her — intent on Him and His Word alone. She found true rest for her soul, and she trusted that that was the one thing truly needful. The rest she could let go — the Word came first and was her highest pleasure.
